Frequently asked questions

General Questions

  • What types of clients do you work with?
We work with individuals aged 12+ for therapy, and offer assessments for adults aged 18+. While we have a strong focus on supporting neurodivergent clients, including Autistic individuals and ADHDers, we also see people with a wide range of experiences and mental health concerns.

  • Do you offer in-person sessions?
Yes, we offer in-person appointments in Maroochydore, as well as Telehealth sessions available Australia-wide.

  • What can I expect in my first therapy session?
Your first session will be a safe space to discuss your goals, challenges, and what you hope to gain from therapy. We'll work together to create a plan that suits your needs. If you would like a visual guide of what the first appointment will be like, you can download our social story here.

  • Who will I be seeing for sessions?
All sessions are with Melanie, a Clinical Psychologist and the founder of Unmasked Psychology. You can read more about Melanie here.

  • What does it mean that you're a neuroaffirming psychologist?

A neuroaffirming approach recognises neurodivergence, such as Autism and ADHD, as natural variations of the human brain rather than something to be “fixed”. In therapy, we work with the brain’s unique wiring instead of trying to change it. Communication styles, sensory needs, and personal preferences are respected at every step. Masking is never expected. Therapy is shaped to fit the individual, not the other way around.

  • Can I ask for accommodations to make sessions more accessible?
Absolutely. We understand that everyone’s needs are different. You're welcome to ask for any adjustments that would help you feel more comfortable, including bringing a support person, taking breaks, adjusting the lighting, using fidgets, or communicating by email instead of phone.

If you have any preferences or support needs that could help make therapy feel more comfortable or accessible, you're very welcome to let us know by completing this optional adaptations form* and emailing it to admin@unmaskedpsychology.com.au.

Telehealth & Accessibility

  • How do Telehealth sessions work?
Telehealth sessions are conducted securely via video call. You’ll receive a link before your session, and you can join from the comfort of your home.

  • Is Telehealth suitable for neurodivergent clients?
Absolutely! We tailor sessions to meet your needs and can adjust communication styles, pacing, and more to ensure a comfortable experience.

Assessments

  • What types of assessments do you offer?
We provide comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessments, including Autism and ADHD assessments, with a focus on understanding each individual's strengths, challenges, and support needs.

At this time, assessments are only available for adults (18+).

We do not conduct assessments for cognitive abilities (including intellectual disabilities or giftedness), communication disorders (such as language disorders, social communication difficulties, or speech sound disorders), specific learning disorders (like dyslexia or dyscalculia), movement-related conditions (including stereotypic movement disorder or developmental coordination disorder), tic disorders, or neurocognitive conditions acquired through factors such as brain injury, substance use, or epilepsy.

  • How does the assessment process work?
You can self-refer for an assessment by emailing us or completing our enquiry form. You are welcome to request an assessment for ADHD, Autism, or both.

Assessments are completed across three stages, with payment split into each step to keep things simple and flexible:

    1. Intake Session ($300)
This 90-minute session is a chance to explore your story, how you experience the world, what has brought you to assessment, and what you are hoping to understand. You are welcome to bring a support person if that would help you feel more comfortable.

    2. Assessment Session(s) ($500–$750 depending on type)
You will complete a set of online questionnaires tailored to your needs, followed by an assessment session with Melanie. This may include informal conversation and structured tasks, always approached with curiosity and care.

    3. Report and Feedback Session ($800–$1,200 depending on type)
Melanie will review your results, complete a detailed and strengths-based report, and meet with you to talk through the findings and what they might mean for you. The report includes personalised insights, support recommendations, and, where appropriate, diagnostic impressions that may help explain your experiences.

Whether you are seeking answers, clarity, or simply want to better understand your neurotype, the process is designed to be collaborative, supportive, and empowering.

Payments & Rebates

  • Do I need a referral or Mental Health Care Plan to access sessions?
No, you do not need a referral or a Mental Health Care Plan to book a session. You’re welcome to book directly without seeing a GP first. However, without a Mental Health Care Plan, you won’t be able to claim a Medicare rebate for your sessions.

  • How do I pay for my sessions?
Payment for therapy sessions is due at the time of your appointment and is conveniently processed through our secure practice management system, Halaxy. Assessment payments are made in three instalments, which will be outlined when you book your assessment.

  • Do you offer Medicare rebates or bulk billing?
We do not offer bulk billing. However, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates with a valid Mental Health Care Plan. Please check with your GP for details. If you have private health insurance, you may also be able to claim a rebate depending on your provider and policy.
